Public Notice: Providing protective 3rd dose COVID-19 vaccines to Long Term Care residents

YELLOWKNIFE (August 24, 2021) - To ensure the continued safeguarding of Long Term Care (LTC) facilities against the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in the territory, the NTHSSA, at the direction of the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO), will be offering a limited roll-out of 3rd doses of the COVID-19 vaccines to all residents living in LTC facilitates. The following statement from OCPHO was provided at the time of release of the Directive:

'With community spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 now confirmed, and the fact that it has been at least 6 months since administration of the second doses in the majority residents of the LTC facilities in the NWT, the CPHO recommends third doses of COVID-19 vaccine be provided now to those in living in LTC facilities.'" NTHSSA awaits further direction from the OCPHO with regards to further roll-out of 3rd doses to other populations in the NWT.

These 3rd doses will be administered on a voluntary basis, after a minimum of five (5) months following a resident’s second dose, or a minimum of six (6) months following their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

LTC residents are being exclusively prioritized for this initiative due to the high risk of health complications in this specific population. To ensure the ongoing availability of staffing resources, all other residents, patients, and staff are being asked to refrain from requesting exemptions for access to 3rd doses at this time, we will not be issuing 3rd doses outside LTC resident populations.

Further guidance on 3rd vaccine doses will be provided by the Chief Public Health Officer when an update is available. First and second dose COVID-19 vaccinations are still available for all eligible persons through local health centres or public health offices. Those who are fully immunized (2 doses) still have strong protection against COVID-19, including the Delta Variant.

Individuals currently located in Yellowknife are able to book their first or second dose vaccinations in advance online, or may attend the Centre Square Mall vaccination clinic as a walk-in during open hours. For all other communities see www.nthss.ca/covid-vaccine or call your health centre for information.
