The Paid Family/Caregiver Pilot Project is a two year pilot project that will give support to community members living in their own homes. As this is a pilot project, this program is being trialed in select communities, including: Behchoko, Dettah, N’Dilo, Yellowknife and Hay River. Elders, seniors, and persons with disabilities who have ongoing care or support needs and reside in one of these four communities are invited to apply. Please see below for the intake dates for each community.
The program is meant to provide support to the selected individuals, to help them live in their own homes for as long as possible. If accepted into the pilot, a caregiver will be paid to help with tasks in the home and community for up to 4 hours each week. Caregivers can help with things like:
- Cleaning or laundry
- Meal preparation
- Hauling wood or snow removal
- Running Errands
Caregivers are not meant to replace homecare or long-term care. The caregiver can be a family member or can be a hired employee of the community organization; pilot participants can select their caregiver of choice. All selected caregivers will be hired by the community organization responsible for delivering the program.
As this service option is in a pilot phase, only a predetermined number of applicants will be accepted into the program. Individuals are admitted into the program based on their assessed level of care need. This assessment is completed by a nurse from the home and community care program.
From January 10th to 24th, 2020, the program is accepting applications Dettah and N'Dilo. To apply, interested individuals can contact Home and Continuing Care in Yellowknife, by calling 867-767-9222 or in person at: 1st floor Jan Stirling Building, 4702 Franklin Avenue, Yellowknife.
Dettah and N'Dilo will be accepting 5 people into the pilot program.
