Public Announcement: Yellowknife Seniors Activities Assessment
YELLOWKNIFE (August 2, 2019) – The Yellowknife Seniors Community Based Support Steering Committee is launching a survey to assess how residents 55 years or older living in Yellowknife, N’Dilo and Dettah are involved in social activities, and what they need to be involved in those activities. The results of this survey will be shared with other seniors-focused organizations and used to improve current service planning for older adults in the Yellowknife area.
Day Programs and social activities are key supports to assisting older adults and their family caregivers in aging healthfully within their own home and community. A number of supports and services are offered in the area, but at times it is difficult to know whether the individual needs of seniors are being met. Some seniors may not know about or have access to existing supports and services, or may be at risk for social exclusion due to financial restraints and transportation access
Participation on the Committee includes Executives from Yellowknife Association for Community Living, NWT Seniors Society, Yellowknife Seniors Society, AVENS A Community for Seniors, and the Northwest Territories Disabilities Council, as well as Executives from the Department of Health and Social Services and Northwest Territories Health and Social Services. The GNWT and the many non-government organizations involved are committed to working together to ensure effective supports and programs are available for seniors to engage in community-based activities.
