"My Why": Dr. Claudia Kraft discusses practicing medicine in the Northwest Territories

Blog Post

Meet Dr. Claudia Kraft, Territorial Medical Director for the Northwest Territories (NWT). Over 10 years ago, she and her spouse, who is also a physician, made the bold decision to move to the NWT – and they have never looked back. This is the story behind her “why”.

“I moved to the NWT with my spouse because we were searching for more than just jobs. We were looking for a team, a place where our work could truly make a difference, and where we could grow both professionally and personally. From my very first site visit, I knew this was that place.

“Across the North is a community of dedicated, compassionate professionals, delivering high-quality care in a setting that demands creativity, resilience, and deep collaboration. The work is challenging and incredibly meaningful. I am grateful to work alongside colleagues who not only bring skill, but optimism and humility, to everything they do.

“Over the past decade, I’ve grown from a full-service family physician to a focused emergency medicine practitioner and health system leader. Along the way, I have earned additional competencies in emergency and addiction medicine, all through opportunities available right here in the North.

“But it’s not just the professional growth — it’s the impact. Here, I know how much my skills are valued and I never have to question whether my work is making an impact. I get to do work that I feel is aligned with my values, with amazing people, and in one of the most beautiful places in Canada.

“I am really proud to be raising my kids as Northerners and I feel they will continue to have fantastic opportunities here as they grow.

“In the NWT, the opportunities for interesting, values-driven work is incredible, and it’s hard to imagine working alongside better people. The NWT is truly spectacular, and I am grateful to get to live, work and play here.”
