YELLOWKNIFE (June 20, 2025) – The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) and Victoria-based INVINCIBLE group hosted a powerful presentation in Yellowknife today that highlighted the firsthand experiences of Indigenous youth in care.
The event was co-organized by Child, Family and Community Wellness and members of INVINCIBLE: Our Voices From Care, a digital storytelling project by Indigenous youth in care.
Presenters used graphic novels, poems, videos, artwork, and journals to highlight their own experiences and emotions within the child and family services system while simultaneously creating space for attendees to share and learn together. The goal of their project is to inspire other Indigenous children and youth in care and to let them know that they are never alone.
INVINCIBLE’s trip to Yellowknife also included a creative hands-on workshop with Northern Indigenous youth in care. The NTHSSA extends its deepest appreciation to INVINCIBLE, community and Indigenous leaders, partner organizations, and community members for joining us for a powerful morning of storytelling and sharing.
“I would like to thank members of INVINCIBLE for sharing their inspiring stories with us and creating a space for other Indigenous youth in care to contribute to this conversation. Every child has the right to grow up free from abuse, neglect, or harm, and it is important for youth in care to know that they are never alone. Whether you live in Yellowknife or a remote community, Child and Family Services offer support through local staff and regional offices so that families do not need to navigate these challenges on their own.”
- Kristy Jones, Executive Director, Child, Family and Community Wellness, NTHSSA
“We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Wiliideh Yellowknife Dene Nation who hosted us on their beautiful unceded territory, and to the staff from the Child, Family and Community Wellness (CFCW) Division, Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA), for organizing this amazing event.
“We have been gifted a great opportunity to share our stories in our own voices as Indigenous youth in care. It is so important for these stories to be heard and shared because we want to make right the harms of the child welfare system and support the wellbeing of Indigenous young people. I am so proud to be part of INVINCIBLE: Our Voices From Care. We do not often hear from Indigenous children and youth in care and events like this help us learn alongside one another and share our spirits, stories, and artwork. Thank you again for hosting us!”
- T̓at̓uusinapšiił Emma Hubert, INVINCIBLE
