(Yellowknife, March 30, 2022) – Beginning tomorrow, March 31, there will be changes taking effect in the delivery of day and sobering centre services in Yellowknife. These changes are being implemented as the contract with the current operator, the NWT Disabilities Council (NWTDC), ends and the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) assumes operations of the 50th street location.
Day Sheltering Services:
As of noon, Thursday, March 31, Day Centre services will no longer operate at the combined service location at 5111, 50th street. Day shelter users will access services at the New Day Shelter at 4807 49th Street (site of the old Yellowknife Visitors Centre).
Shelter users will have access to food, laundry, showers and other programming at this site.
At noon, Thursday, March 31, the combined Day and Sobering Centre will close for cleaning and maintenance and will reopen at 5pm. The 50th Street site will provide sobering services for individuals who need a safe place during the evening and overnight. Effective April 1, the hours of operation for the Sobering Centre will be 4pm to 8am.
Individuals who need to sleep off the effects of alcohol or drugs during the day time hours of 8 am – 4pm will be supervised at the 49th Street shelter location.
Changes will be directly communicated to shelter users and partner organizations in Yellowknife to ensure awareness.
We would like to thank the NWTDC team for the service it has provided over the past three years.
