The NTHSSA is pleased to highlight the Łıwegǫ̀atì Volunteer Program, a program designed to support Long Term Care and Extended Care residents, while also creating space for volunteer involvement in other meaningful areas throughout the Łıwegǫ̀atì Building.
The program, which was launched in 2025, has already proved successful. Volunteers continue to step forward to offer their time and residents and staff are encouraged by the program’s growth.
Alexis Goulding is one volunteer who has been offering her time within Long Term Care at the Łıwegǫ̀atì Building. She primarily supports the recreation therapy team by helping with exercise groups, art activities, singing groups, social events, and one-on-one companionship visits with residents. In doing so, she says her role is to offer time, presence, and comfortable company that add warmth to someone’s day.
“I’ve always been someone who gains energy and joy from connecting with others,” she said.
“Growing up in a small town in Labrador, I was surrounded by people who valued conversation, light-hearted humour, and that easy back-and-forth banter that brings people closer. When I found out about the opportunity to volunteer in Long Term Care, it felt like the perfect place to express that part of myself.”
Alexis says life moves quickly, so she relishes the opportunity to slow everything down when she volunteers.
“The moment I walk through the door, the rush of my day falls away, and I get to focus on being present, curious, and connected. Listening to people share pieces of their lives, or simply sitting together in comfortable quiet, feels meaningful in a way that stays with me long after I leave the building.”
Alexis says the building has a warm and welcoming atmosphere that brings out the best in her. She encourages others to think about the impact they can make by volunteering, too.
“You don’t need special skills – just a genuine interest in spending time with others and being present. It’s a place where the atmosphere, the people, and the purpose all align, making volunteering there feel deeply worthwhile.”
