Update: Fort Smith Health Centre to Close on Sunday, August 13th

Public Notice

(Fort Smith, 6 pm, August 12, 2023) – Effective August 13, 2023, at 3:00 pm the Fort Smith Health Centre will close for services in response to the evacuation order issued by the Town of Fort Smith.

Evacuation of the community is the safest option, and all residents are encouraged to follow the evacuation order and make their way to Hay River. All evacuees should register at their receiving site or by using the GNWT’s online evacuee registration from.

While the health centre is closed, those who are experiencing a health emergency should call 911, however local response capacity may be limited. For general medical advice residents can call 811.

Please be aware that local emergency response capacity and air medevac services may be impacted or interrupted by the unpredictable wildfire threat.

Residents who have evacuated are encouraged to stay in place and not return to the community until deemed safe to do so. Health services including homecare and other services offered usually provided by the health centre will not be available. Health and social services will be available to residents in the receiving community for the evacuation centre and in any other NWT community.

Patients and clients who were in care or living in long term care have been or are being moved to facilities that can meet their needs in other communities; the individuals named as next-of-kin on client medical records will be notified directly with details.

We remain committed to keeping residents informed and will continue to assess our service levels as the situation unfolds. Any service changes will be announced on the NTHSSA website and via our Facebook.
