Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation (OMSC)
The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) launched the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation (OMSC) at Stanton Territorial Hospital (March 2026) and in Yellowknife Primary Care (January 2025) to help people who smoke receive proven, supportive care. The OMSC is a validated, evidence‑based approach that integrates identification, brief advice, medication supports (such as nicotine replacement therapy), and proactive follow‑up into routine care, making it more likely that people can successfully quit.
What to expect during your primary care or hospital visit:
- identification and documentation of smoking status;
- brief, supportive counselling;
- access to nicotine replacement therapy and other cessation medications; and
- follow‑up after discharge, including connections to community supports currently available in primary care
