Public Notice
(Fort Smith, August 22, 2026) - The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) is advising the public that earlier this morning the Fort Smith Health Centre activated its lockdown procedures and Mass Casualty (Code Orange) protocol in response to an incident that took place in the community, and a shelter-in-place notice that was issued by local RCMP.
Enacting these protocols is part of NTHSSA standard operating procedures when an event is anticipated to overwhelm typical operating capacity and requires recall of additional staff and resources.
The Code Orange was lifted at 7:45 a.m., but the lockdown protocol will remain in effect until official direction is received confirming that the incident response has concluded and it is safe to return to normal operations.
During this time, please note the following important information:
- If you are in Fort Smith and require emergency care, please call the health centre in advance before presenting in-person, where possible. To reach the Fort Smith Health Centre please call (867) 872-6200.
- If you require mental health and wellness supports, please visit www.nthssa.ca/mentalhealth for information about access in your community and virtual services. Over the coming days, the NTHSSA will work with partners to coordinate mental health and counselling resources to add capacity in the community, as needed.
Updates on service changes and supports will be provided as available.
Please note the NTHSSA is unable to provide further information to media about the incident or any impacted individuals to protect patient confidentiality and public safety.
