North of 60 Northern Medicine Experience with University of Alberta Students

Blog Post

The North of 60 (N60) Northern Medicine Experience is an event held each year in March that brings 12 University of Alberta (U of A) medical students from the North of 60 Medical Student Club, a group that focuses on northern and rural medicine, to Yellowknife. The goal of this event is to expose medical students to healthcare in the Northwest Territories, spark interest in rural medicine, and build connections that encourage future practice in the territory.

From March 5-9, students engaged in a variety of activities that offered both cultural context and clinical exposure that included a private curated tour of the medical archives at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, and job shadowing opportunities in various units at Stanton Territorial Hospital and the Łıwegǫ̀atì Building. On the final day, students got to explore Yellowknife, drive along the ice road, and enjoy their own activities individually and as a group.

The NTHSSA looks forward to providing educational experiences to prospective medical students through this program.
