NTHSSA implements bus service in Inuvik for medical travel clients

Public Notice

INUVIK (December 9, 2025) – The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) understands that travelling outside of your home community for medical care can be challenging, especially for residents in smaller communities. To help make the journey easier, the NTHSSA has introduced a bus service to support clients travelling into Inuvik for medical appointments.

This new initiative will allow the NTHSSA to provide scheduled bus transportation services for medical travel clients between the Inuvik Airport and the Inuvik Regional Hospital (IRH) Transient Centre, which is used as a boarding home for medical travel clients. The service is managed by IRH NTHSSA staff and aims to reduce wait times during peak travel periods and ensure clients have reliable, predictable transportation when accessing care.

By removing the need for client reliance on smaller-capacity vehicles, the new service also enhances safety, improves coordination for groups of travellers, and supports better planning for both clients and staff. The initiative is also expected to provide a more efficient and cost-effective transportation option for the NTHSSA by keeping the costs in-house, while enhancing overall client experience.

Currently, the dedicated bus service operates Monday to Friday. Clients travelling from the Inuvik Airport to the IRH Transient Centre on weekends are asked to continue using local transportation options. Over time, the NTHSSA may explore expanding the service.

Clients travelling to Inuvik for medical care who have questions about NTHSSA bus transportation can watch for signage at the airport or call 867-777-8000 for more information.
