May 7th marks National Child and Youth Mental Health Day. This day aims to remind us that even small amounts of kindness and intention can make a big difference in the lives of young people. Feeling seen, heard, valued, and supported by a healthy adult is one of the biggest contributors to children and youth having positive mental health. Mental health and wellness are an important part of overall wellness and wellbeing, and it is extremely important to take care of our mental health.
As we recognize National Child and Youth Mental Health Day – and Mental Health Month throughout May – the NTHSSA would like to remind residents of the wide range of formal and informal supports available, from eMental health resources, to crisis lines, to regional supports.
The Child and Youth Counselling Program in particular has flexibility to meet the needs of school-aged children, youth, and their families, with children and youth not needing to attend school in order to access services. Services are available during standard office hours all-year round, except for on weekends and statutory holidays. Child and Youth Counsellors can also help children, youth, and their families navigate the system if someone’s needs fall outside of their scope.
The NTHSSA would like to recognize Child and Youth Counsellors and other team members who are supporting children and youth within their regions. You play a key role in supporting and empowering young Northerners, and work hard to ensure that children, youth, and their families have the tools and resources to thrive in their mental health and wellness. Thank you for always showing up, holding space, and making a difference in the lives of young people.
If you or a loved one needs support, we encourage you to access any of the mental health resources and supports available to you, including Child and Youth Counsellors in your region. Remember, there is no wrong door when it comes to accessing mental health care. Learn more here: Mental Health Resources and Supports | Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority
