Opening of Temporary Shelter at Yellowknife Community Arena

Public Notice

(Yellowknife, October 27, 2021) – As part of ongoing day shelter support services, a temporary shelter space opened at the Yellowknife Community Arena on Monday, October 25th. This shelter will be operating seven days a week from 7:00am-6:30pm each day, providing services that include meals, outreach nursing, showers, case management, and cultural and support programming.

The opening of this location will help in further reducing the potential spread of COVID-19 and provide increased safety for shelters users. To facilitate access from the downtown area, transportation options are available and will be assessed on an ongoing basis. At this time there is no definitive end date for this service, the temporary shelter will remain accessible to users until it is no longer required.

Progress toward a more-permanent temporary day shelter at the old Northern Frontier Visitors Association location continues, with the GNWT working closely with both the City of Yellowknife and Kavanaugh Bros. Ltd. to prepare for the arrival of the modular units.

Ensuring critical shelter supports remain available is essential for meeting the needs of homeless and under housed community members.
