Protect those around you and skip visits if you are sick this holiday season

Public Notice

YELLOWKNIFE (December 15, 2025) – Across the Northwest Territories (NWT), the holiday season often means increased visits to see friends and family and sometimes that includes visiting loved ones in a hospital or long-term care facility.

Following a recent Public Health Advisory issued by the Chief Public Health Officer about increased influenza activity in the NWT, the Northwest Territories Heath and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) would like to remind residents that if you are feeling sick, to please stay home and wait to visit until you are well.

This reminder applies to visitation only and does not apply to people who need medical care. If you need medical help, please seek care as usual. If you have non-urgent health questions, call 811 to speak with a registered nurse.

The NTHSSA understands that staying home and missing out on visiting loved ones this time of year can be challenging, but even mild symptoms can put vulnerable people at risk. It could also have an impact on healthcare professionals who care for this population.

Protect yourself and others this holiday season by:

  • Planning ahead: If you want to visit a loved one in a long-term care or extended care facility, call the facility ahead of time to receive information on any protocols that may be in place to ensure safe visiting practices.
  • Getting vaccinated: It is not too late to get your flu shot. Visit nthssa.ca/flu for more information.
  • Practicing healthy habits:
    • Wash your hands often.
    • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
    • Clean surfaces you touch frequently.
  • Considering wearing a mask in crowded spaces, especially if you are higher risk.
  • Keeping your immune system healthy by eating healthy, exercising, sleeping well, reducing stress, and reducing substance use.

Staying home and away from others when you are feeling unwell is the best gift you can give this holiday season to keep others safe.
