April 7-11, 2025 is Canadian Public Health Week, a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our overall health and wellbeing. As part of this initiative, the NTHSSA will be spotlighting public health workers who are making a difference in NWT communities. For today’s spotlight, we are proud to feature both Ann Pischinger (left) and Melanie Kearley, who serve residents of Fort Smith!
Melanie Kearley, Public Health Nurse
Melanie moved to Fort Smith from Newfoundland after completing her nursing training in 1997. She later attained her Masters of Public Health from the University of Liverpool in 2021.
After completing her nursing practicum in a community health setting, Melanie knew she wanted to pursue a career in public health. Within the field, she works every day to promote and protect the health of all populations, but is especially passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles for children so that they can become healthy teens and adults.
She also actively engages and networks with organizations at the local, territorial, and national level by providing input for policies and procedures related to public health. Melanie says she loves the family-oriented community of Fort Smith – a town that she is proud to call home for more than 20 years. Outside of work, she enjoys yoga, running, skiing, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Ann Pischinger, Community Health Representative (CHR)
Ann has lived in Fort Smith for over 40 years, having first moved to the community to complete her high school education. She later completed her CHR training in 2000 at Portage College in Lac La Biche, Alberta. In her role as a Community Health Representative, Ann plays an essential role in community health promotion, liaising, and advocacy.
Ann enjoys the fact that every workday is different for her – whether it be attending schools, well child clinics, hearing and vision screening, or health promotion events throughout the community.
Ann is proud to call Fort Smith her family’s home, where she regularly enjoys her passions during and after work hours. Keep an eye out for her riding around the community on her bike during the warmer months!
Thank you for everything you do, Ann and Melanie!
