Physician Specialist Services

Physician Specialists are doctors that have a specialized scope of practice.  They diagnose and treat diseases and conditions that are outside of a primary care provider’s scope of practice.  In the NTHSSA, we have nine permanent specialties, as well as visiting specialists (locums) that travel to Yellowknife from down south to provide services.

Permanent specialties include:

  • Anesthesiology
  • General Surgery
  • Internal Medicine
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Orthopedics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Otolaryngology (ENT – Ear, Nose and Throat)
  • Pediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Radiology

Anesthesiology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Radiology are on-call 24/7 for emergency services.

Visiting Specialties include:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Pediatric Allergy
  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Rheumatology
  • Urology

Various subspecialty services also visit intermittently.

How can I get an appointment?

To get an appointment with a specialist physician, you have to be referred by your primary care provider.   Your primary care provider will examine you, and if your disease or condition is out of their scope of practice and they believe you need to see a specialist, they will refer you to the appropriate service.

After you have been referred, the specialist clinic will receive your referral form and contact you to book your appointment.  Our specialty services are offered across the NWT, however depending on where you are located, you may have to travel to see the specialist in Yellowknife or wait for the specialist to visit your community.  If the specialty service you need to see is not one of the permanent or visiting specialties we have in the NWT, you will still receive treatment but will have to travel to Edmonton for your appointment.  If you have to travel, your travel costs will be covered by Medical Travel.

Contact your local hospital, clinic, or health centre for more information about specialty services in your community.  Visit our Regional Portals for more information about what services are offered at your local health centre and which specialty services are scheduled to visit your community.

After your appointment

Depending on what your appointment was for and the results of your appointment, you may have to have a follow-up appointment.  You also may be required to get tests done.  Your physician will let you know if any of this is required and what to expect for next steps.
