Stanton Indigenous Wellness Program

The Indigenous Wellness Program is a program offered at Stanton Territorial Hospital in Yellowknife, NWT, that strives to enhance the patient experience for Indigenous peoples by improving communication and collaboration between Indigenous Peoples and Health Care Providers. The program ensures that cultural beliefs and practices are respected and embedded in the care that is provided at Stanton Hospital.

We offer a variety offer a variety of services including:

  • Medical Interpretation for 7 official languages of the NWT: Tlicho, North Slavey, South Slavey, Denesuline, Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and Inuvialuktun. 
  • Cultural Programming
  • Spiritual Healing: Our program provides access to many religious denominations.
  • Palliative Care Assistance and Support

Our current programming includes:

  • News & Radio
  • Tea & Bannock
  • Traditional games
  • Crafts & Sewing
  • Bannock Making
  • Cleansing Ceremony (smudging available upon request)
  • Traditional lunch provided weekly

Traditional Foods Program

Stanton Hospital is pleased to announce the expansion of our Indigenous Wellness Program which is now comprised of eight full time employees, including a full time Resident Elder, a Traditional Foods Coordinator, and five Indigenous Patient Liaison staff members.  The team provides ongoing programming, individualized support and health system navigation and is continuing to expand on the scope through ongoing education opportunities.

The program has also partnered up with Dexterra Food Services to prepare traditional meals in the Dexterra kitchen which is served every Friday at lunch.  A special menu is offered once a week and the menu interchanges weekly. Bison, Elk, Caribou soups, stews and bannock are the most commonly served meals.

Traditional foods are an important part of the daily lives for many of our people in the Northwest Territories. It is essential for their health, culture and identity, and helps to create a comforting and healing environment for patients in our care at Stanton Territorial Hospital.
