Spotlight: National Volunteer Week 2026

Blog Post

National Volunteer Week (April 19-25, 2026) provides us with an opportunity to recognize the dedicated individuals who give their time, energy, and compassion to residents of the Northwest Territories through volunteerism, including those who volunteer through the Łıwegǫ̀atì Volunteer Program.

From high school students to retirees, volunteers give back to their community and build meaningful connections by supporting recreation therapy programs, offering music and entertainment, providing pet therapy visits, and spending one-on-one time with residents in Long Term and Extended Care.

Their presence enhances care experiences, fosters connection, and reflects a shared commitment to wellbeing, and their contributions remind us that meaningful care is not only built through services, but through relationships, kindness, and time.

The NTHSSA extends its deepest appreciation to all volunteers. Your dedication is truly valued, and the difference you make in the lives of residents, families, and staff does not go unnoticed.

Here are some of the people who are making a difference through the Łıwegǫ̀atì Volunteer Program.

Dave Fournier

Dave Fournier is a valued member of the program who regularly visits Long Term Care residents alongside his therapy dog, Belle. Together, Dave and Belle provide meaningful companionship to residents through friendly conversation, walks, or even quiet moments with Belle by their side.

Dave, who retired over four years ago, says the most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing residents light up when they arrive, often reminiscing about their own pets and expressing heartfelt gratitude.

We value Dave’s time and dedication and the warmth, connection, and joy that he brings to residents with every visit.

“What I enjoy most is when I see a resident light up when they see us coming down the hall or when we are invited into their room,” he said. “Many times they say “thank you for visiting, you made my day” so those are special moments and exactly what we want to accomplish with this program.”

He describes the experience as incredibly fulfilling and encourages others to consider volunteering, sharing that even small moments can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day.

Kiranpreet Kaur Sekhon

Kiranpreet Kaur Sekhon is a dedicated volunteer who helps deliver Long Term Care recreation programs and community outings.

She says a simple feeling inspired her to join the program in the first place. “I live away from my family, and there are moments when I wish I could just sit with my grandparents. That feeling made me realize that others may feel the same way, so I just wanted to sit with people, like family.”

Kiranpreet enjoys spending time with residents, talking and listening to them, and even sitting with them quietly. “Some days we laugh, some days they share stories from years ago, and sometimes it’s just about being there.”

She credits staff and volunteers for creating a warm and welcoming environment at Łıwegǫ̀atì where residents are cared for with heart.

Kiranpreet encourages others to consider volunteering their time, adding that someone else’s presence alone can make all the difference. “You might walk in thinking you’re giving something, but you’ll leave with much more.”

Want to volunteer at Łıwegǫ̀atì?

The Łıwegǫ̀atì Volunteer Program, launched in 2025, is designed to support Long Term and Extended Care residents, while also creating space for volunteer involvement in other meaningful areas throughout the building.

The program has already proved successful, with volunteers continuing to step forward to offer their time and residents and staff encouraged by the program’s growth since its launch.

If you are 16 or older and looking to make a difference in Long Term Care or Extended Care – or if you simply want to learn more – we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to NTHSSA_YK_Volunteer@gov.nt.ca.
