NOTICE: All rehabilitation services in Yellowknife have moved to the Łıwegǫ̀atì Building on 550 Byrne Rd. 

Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) is a rehabilitation services that provides speech and language therapy to people with communication disorders.   Our Speech Language Pathologists provide a full range of SLP services, including the identification, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of speech delay, language development and communication disorders.

Some of the things our Speech Language Pathologists can help with include:

  • Speaking clearly and smoothly
  • Forming ideas into words (word-finding) and speaking in full sentences
  • Forming speech sounds
  • Stuttering
  • Fluency
  • Language
  • Swallowing Problems
  • Cognitive impairments that interfere with communication
  • And other related communication disorders.

How can I get an appointment with a Speech Language Pathologist?

Do you think Speech Language Pathology could be right for you or your child?  You can now self-refer to this program, which means you can sign yourself up without needing a referral from a doctor or nurse practitioner.  Contact your local health centre, clinic, or hospital for more information, or self-refer yourself to the program.

Our speech language pathology services are offered across the NWT.  If you are located in a smaller community, you may have to be seen by a visiting Speech-Language Pathologist or travel to a larger centre for service.  Talk to your local health centre for more information.

Please send your completed self-referral form to sth_rehab@gov.nt.ca, or drop your form off at your local hospital or health centre (Fort Smith, Hay River, Beaufort Delta, and Sahtu Region).
