NTHSSA launches model at Stanton Territorial Hospital to help people quit smoking

YELLOWKNIFE (March 27, 2026) – The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) is launching the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation (OMSC) at Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH), to help people who smoke get care while in hospital and after they leave. This program will be offered as part of routine, voluntary care at STH starting March 27, 2026.

Reduced services during YKDFN Spring Carnival

YELLOWKNIFE (March 19, 2026) - The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority’s (NTHSSA) Yellowknife Region and Stanton Territorial Hospital will observe a half-day civic holiday on Friday, March 20, 2026 in recognition of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation’s (YKDFN) Spring Carnival.

Service adjustments for Yellowknife on Friday, March 20, 2026, will include the following:

NTHSSA to undertake Emergency Department physician shortage contingency planning in Inuvik

INUVIK (January 30, 2026) – The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) is expanding planning work for physician shortage contingency measures in Emergency Departments using virtual care, building on similar work already undertaken in Fort Smith, Yellowknife, and Hay River.

Physician shortages have been a challenge across all jurisdictions, and it is no different in the NWT, making it critical that we continue contingency planning to ensure continuity of service provision within Emergency Departments.

NTHSSA implements bus service in Inuvik for medical travel clients

INUVIK (December 9, 2025) – The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) understands that travelling outside of your home community for medical care can be challenging, especially for residents in smaller communities. To help make the journey easier, the NTHSSA has introduced a bus service to support clients travelling into Inuvik for medical appointments.

NTHSSA recognizes World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day during community events in Inuvik

INUVIK (November 21, 2025) – The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) recognized World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day on November 17, 2025 by hosting community events in Inuvik in partnership with the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation and the Gwich’in Tribal Council.

Temporary Service Reduction at Inuvik Regional Hospital

Inuvik, Northwest Territories (November 7, 2025) -The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) wishes to advise residents that a temporary service reduction has been implemented at Inuvik Regional Hospital (IRH).
This reduction in service will impact labour and delivery services at IRH and any elective or emergency surgeries. It is expected to be in place until Monday, November 10th.

Any patients immediately impacted have been notified and a plan for care has been arranged.

COVID-19 vaccines available for all individuals throughout the Northwest Territories

YELLOWKNIFE (November 7, 2025)  – Additional supply of COVID-19 vaccines has arrived in the Northwest Territories (NWT), meaning anyone can request and receive a COVID-19 vaccine at seasonal flu clinics throughout the NWT.

In Yellowknife, this means that anyone – regardless of risk level - can request a COVID-19 vaccine at the clinic located at Centre Square Mall. The clinic will remain operational until Saturday, November 8, 2025.
